- Describe the pet the way you would describe a person: breed, colour, size and what it is doing ("a fluffy cream Persian cat pawing at his cheek"). "A cat" alone gets you a generic grey tabby.

- Say where the pet is and how it touches you: held against the chest, on a shoulder, asleep on your lap. Without that line the animal often floats beside you or gets a human sized head.
- Pick one light. Direct phone flash at night, soft window light in the morning and golden hour on grass all work, but mixing them makes the fur and the skin look cut out from different photos.
